Alexander Gorlizki’s most recent exploration into the intricacies of Indian miniature paintings have moved further inwards with ever more detailed, dream-like compositions as well as outward in the form of room-sized installations incorporating carpets, wallpapers and textiles.

For his current show at Galerie Martin Kudlek, “Are We There Yet?” Gorlizki developed an earlier drawing that refers to borders of 19th Century paintings and specific traditional techniques to create a shading effect and turned that into an architectural plan with hovering amorphic blobs. This image was subsequently developed into a striking wallpaper specifically for Galerie Kudlek that forms the backdrop to his most recent works on found paper, book pages and photographs.

His works on paper combine different elements like figurative miniature painting, ornaments and patterns, as well as repainted photographies and magazine pages. His compositions range from geometrical abstractions to narrative-surreal scenes that provide insight into complex worlds.

Along side these intricate and dense images filled with quirky characters and pattern-filled abstractions that combine Eastern and Western iconographies the artist has also been working on a series of wood, brass and marble sculptures. These explore the conventions of gallery plinths and exhibition stands that become sculptures in their own rights and incorporate many of the elements of his drawings within their construction.
