Untiefen des Raums

With his expansive and multi-layered paper installation “Depths of Space” (original: “Untiefen des Raums”), Cologne-based artist Simon Schubert responds directly to the building of the Feld-Haus, an architectural sculpture by Danish artist Per Kirkeby (1939–2018).
Schubert transforms the exhibition space into a white cube made of folded white paper. The delicate low reliefs of his large-format folds oscillate in the interplay of light and shadow between drawing and sculpture, between two- and three-dimensionality. From the paper — which serves both as image carrier and design material — illusionistic architectural spaces emerge. Themes such as disappearance, absence, and the internal perception of memory are recurring motifs in the artist’s work. At the center of the installation is a monumental, walk-in paper sculpture coated with graphite powder.
